Your Kashmir Great Lakes trek begins from Srinagar after an early breakfast, followed by a picturesque drive to Sonamarg, popularly known as the “Meadow of Gold.” This scenic route once served as part of the ancient Silk Route connecting Kashmir with Tibet.
As you travel, you’ll pass through charming spots like Wayil Bridge and the Gateway of Sonamarg, with the glacial waters of the Sind River flowing alongside the road. On reaching Sonamarg, you can explore nearby attractions (at your own cost), including Zero Point, the Drass War Memorial, or take a pony ride to Thajwas Glacier.
Later, head to Shitkadi campsite, where you’ll stay overnight in tents surrounded by breathtaking Himalayan scenery.
Shitkadi to Nichnai Trek (11,500 ft | 11 km)
Day two marks the start of your trekking adventure in Kashmir. Begin early and trek uphill toward Nichnai, passing through forested trails and open meadows. Shortly after the trek begins, you’ll reach an army checkpoint where registration is required—carry a valid ID for verification.
The trail gradually ascends to the famous Table Top meadow, offering stunning panoramic views of Sonamarg and distant glaciers. From here, the route follows a scenic riverside path lined with lush greenery and alpine landscapes. By evening, you’ll arrive at Nichnai campsite, a peaceful spot surrounded by mountains, perfect for an overnight stay.

After breakfast, continue your trek toward the beautiful Vishansar Valley. Today’s highlight is crossing Nichnai Pass, located at an altitude of around 12,500 feet. The climb is moderately challenging, with rocky sections, but rewards you with incredible panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.
At the top, you may find a small tea stall where trekkers often take a break. From the pass, descend into Vishansar Valley, where the landscape transforms into vast meadows filled with colorful wildflowers. Continue trekking through this scenic valley until you reach your campsite for an overnight stay.
Vishansar & Krishansar Lake Exploration (11,975–12,500 ft)
Spend the day exploring the stunning alpine beauty of Vishansar Lake, known for its crystal-clear water and reflections of snow-covered peaks. The peaceful surroundings make it one of the most beautiful highlights of the Kashmir Great Lakes trek.
Later, take a short hike to Krishansar Lake, located about an hour away. This twin lake is equally mesmerizing, surrounded by lush meadows and towering mountains. You can also hike further toward Gadsar Pass for panoramic views or enjoy trout fishing (with permission). Return to the Vishansar campsite for another night in the lap of nature.
